Rumford Hospital Receives Pathway to Excellence Designation

Rumford Hospital is pleased to announce it has achieved Pathway to Excellence designation for the second time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Rumford Hospital shares this designation with only 140 other hospitals in the world and is the only Hospital in Maine as well as the only Critical Access Hospital in New England to receive Pathway designation.

The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the elements of work environments where nurses can flourish. The designation substantiates the professional satisfaction of nurses at Rumford Hospital and identifies it as one of the best places to work.

"Becoming a Pathway to Excellence organization has created an environment where our nurses can thrive. The pride, camaraderie and strength of our nursing department are palpable. The nurses realize the importance of their voice in the hospital decision-making process. The pathway to excellence experience has helped us focus on the journey as well the destination. As our leadership team and staff worked on each of the pathway standards, we bonded as a team, perusing a common goal," said Becky Hall, Director of Nursing.

The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of characteristics known as "The Pathway to Excellence Criteria." For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment -- as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be present in the facility's practices, policies, and culture. Nurses in the organization verify the presence of the criteria in the organization through participation in a completely confidential online survey.

"Through this process, our nursing retention has improved, staff participation on committees has increased and our patient satisfaction rates have soared. As a nurse leader, I could not be more proud of the nurses at Rumford Hospital," said Becky Hall, Director of Nursing.

As a Pathway to Excellence designated organization, Rumford Hospital is committed to nurses, to what nurses identify as important to their practice, and to valuing nurses' contributions in the workplace. This designation confirms to the public that nurses working at Rumford Hospital know their efforts are supported. The honor encourages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and nurturing environment.

Rumford Hospital President David Frum said achieving Pathway to Excellence accreditation demonstrates "that Rumford Hospital supports an outstanding nursing staff that provides safe, effective care to patients, whether in the emergency department, the operating room, or any other service area. We are pleased to earn this designation and are very proud of our nurses."

The Pathway to Excellence designation is perfectly suited to small and medium-sized healthcare organizations, but is attainable by all healthcare facilities around the world.
